Just Chat / Using the Plesk control panel ...
Last post by McGyver45 - June 19, 2017, 05:19:18 AM
Hello Hostned,

I am considering a stock installation of one of the CMS products from the control panel.  I am thinking of WordPress or Joomla.  Does Hostned have a preference as to which we use from a security standpoint?  Are there any changes from the standard install that need to be done?  I do not want to leave my site or your servers vulnerable.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Email and Webmail / What is the Policy for the Ema...
Last post by Dynaweb - May 19, 2017, 11:11:17 AM
Your hosting includes email with advanced SPAM filtering like Apache Spamassassin. This is controlled by you from your hosting Control Panel (Cpanel or Plesk).

An optimally configured IMAP mailbox enables a Spam email folder called "Spam" where detected SPAM messages are sent to. This keeps your Inbox clean and SPAM-Free :)

Our policy for SPAM folders is to automatically delete messages therein after 21 days. This allows you ample time to scan the Spam folder periodically for possible False Positives, or messages that should not be there.

Email and Webmail / Advanced SPAM Filtering by Spa...
Last post by Dynaweb - December 29, 2016, 04:31:56 PM
SPAM is a problem for everyone at some point or another. To help you fight SPAM, HostNed offers a powerful tool that keeps up-to-date with the very latest pattern recognition software. While most providers offer SpamAssassin with default rules that catches only a limited amount of bad stuff, we allow you to assist yourself and the HostNed community by reporting SPAM messages that make their way through. The technical term is "Server-wide Baysian SpamAssassin Email Rules". It works much like anti-virus software does, but is designed for email systems.

Here is how to use it (HostNed Hosting Only):
  • First make sure that SpamAssassin is enabled in the Control Panel. See documentation here: Cpanel, Plesk. Just use the basic config. We recommend setting to send all identified SPAM to the folder named "spam".
  • Now we need to create two new mail folders in the top level (not inside other folders). One named "Report-spam" and another named "Report-notspam". (Case sensitive, no quotes)
  • To use it like a pro, report new SPAM by moving any noticeable SPAM that comes to your Inbox to the folder "Report-spam". The server will check that folder daily for fresh SPAM you added recently. As a courtesy, we do not remove these messages from that folder for a few days, but eventually it will clear itself. The server will use the messages you reported to "learn" what the new SPAM patterns looks like and will attempt to move any incoming messages that match it to your "spam" folder. In case any messages come through into the "spam" that are not really SPAM (false positives), move them into the "Report-notspam" folder you created. Same deal, allow the server a couple days to process the report.
This powerful tool can give you the edge in SPAM prevention that are typically reserved only for expensive providers or custom systems.

* Please be respectful of the other community members by REPORTING ONLY ACTUAL SPAM, unwanted messages from legitimate sources are not to be reported here as other users may indeed desire those in their inboxes.

Email and Webmail / Using Gmail With Your HostNed ...
Last post by Dynaweb - April 15, 2016, 12:24:45 PM
This article is a modern guide for connecting your HostNed-hosted email accounts with your personal Gmail account. Whether you're looking to receive, send, or manage domain emails using Gmail, this guide outlines the best practices and options available.

✉️ Overview of Your HostNed Email Options

Every HostNed Web Hosting plan includes:
  • Custom @yourdomain.com email accounts
  • Access via Webmail (from any browser)
  • Support for standard protocols: IMAP, POP3, and SMTP
  • Compatibility with clients like Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, K-9 Mail, and others
  • Ability to create Forwarders to redirect mail to external addresses

🔄 Option 1: Set Up Email Forwarding to Gmail (Most Common)

✔️ Advantages:
  • Easiest and quickest method
  • No need to change DNS or MX records
  • Emails arrive directly in Gmail inbox
  • Works well for basic personal or low-volume business use
Disadvantages:
  • Gmail only fetches forwarded mail, not sent mail (unless configured further)
  • You may not be able to organise forwarded mail into specific Gmail labels automatically
  • Gmail's SMTP server must be set up separately for replying as your domain
✅ How To Set Up a Forwarder
In cPanel (Linux)
  • Log into your control panel at:
    https://yourdomain.com/cpanel
  • Go to Email → Forwarders
  • Click Add Forwarder
  • Enter your full email address (e.g. info@yourdomain.com) and your Gmail address
  • Click Add Forwarder to save
📖 cPanel Forwarders Documentation

In Plesk (Linux)
  • Log into your control panel at:
    https://yourdomain.com:8443
  • Go to Mail → Email Addresses
  • Click on the desired email account
  • Go to the Forwarding tab
  • Check Switch on mail forwarding and enter your Gmail address
  • Click OK to save

Quote⚠️ Note: HostNed no longer offers Windows/IIS hosting. All Plesk servers are now Linux-based.

🔁 Option 2: Use Gmail to Fetch Your Mail via POP3 and Send Mail via SMTP

This allows Gmail to both receive and send email on behalf of your domain. It works by setting up Gmail to check your HostNed mailbox via POP3 and send via either Gmail's or your domain's SMTP.
✔️ Advantages:
  • Gmail becomes a full-featured interface for your domain email
  • Keeps a backup of your mail on Gmail
  • More reliable sending as your domain (if SMTP is set up)
Disadvantages:
  • Requires manual setup of credentials and server settings
  • POP3 may be slower than forwarding (depending on Gmail's polling intervals)
  • May be confusing for less technical users
📍 To set this up in Gmail:
  • Go to Gmail Settings → Accounts and Import
  • Under Check mail from other accounts, click Add a mail account
  • Enter your full HostNed email and use the server settings provided in your control panel
  • For sending, use Send Mail As → Add another email address

🛠 Option 3: Use Google Workspace (Business Email)

This advanced method involves changing your domain's MX records to point to Google's mail servers and using Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) to handle your mail.
✔️ Advantages:
  • Full Gmail features and Google admin tools for your domain email
  • Better deliverability and security
  • Shared calendars, drive, and more
Disadvantages:
  • Not free – requires a monthly Google Workspace subscription
  • More complex setup (you must change DNS settings, verify domain ownership, etc.)
  • Entire email handling moves away from HostNed servers

⚠️ NOTICE: Avoid Using Both Forwarding and Mailbox Access Simultaneously

While it's technically possible to set up an email address to both forward to Gmail and remain active as a standalone mailbox, we do not recommend doing this unless you're fully aware of the implications.
Here's why:
  • Duplicate Emails: When you set up forwarding and keep the mailbox active, Gmail will show and manage the messages you receive, but copies of those same messages will still be stored on your HostNed mail server.
  • Quota Overruns: Since the messages remain on the server and are often not manually checked or cleared, your disk usage quota can silently fill up, eventually causing new messages to bounce or be rejected.
  • Inbox Management Confusion: Messages deleted or archived in Gmail do not remove or reflect changes in your hosting account inbox.
QuoteRecommended Practice:
If you're forwarding email to Gmail, we suggest either:
  • Only use forwarding, and don't log in separately to Webmail or a mail client, or
  • Use Gmail's POP3 retrieval method to download the messages instead of forwarding, with Gmail configured to delete messages from the server after retrieval (via the "Leave a copy on the server" setting).
This will keep your mailboxes clean, prevent overages, and maintain a consistent email experience.

I will  chime in on this and say AVOID CUSTOMDROPSHIPPER.COM at all costs.

They are inconsistent at best, and they are scamming people out of their hard earned money.  IF, and I say if they actually process your order, it will take 3-4 weeks to arrive here in the states. When I first signed up, most orders were delivered within 2 weeks or a bit longer. So, I then made the mistake of placing over 60 orders with them, all of which were never shipped, amounting to over $1,000 which I now have to fight with Paypal to get back.  they have been giving me the runaround ever since.  They are based in China, and there is no phone number to call and they never reply to emails.

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH CUSTOMDROPSHIPPER.COM (also doing business as artscow.com)!

Windows Hosting / Windows 2003 Servers Upgraded ...
Last post by Dynaweb - July 27, 2015, 09:20:43 AM
NOTICE: Microsoft Windows Hosting is now offered exclusively at DomainsNed. HostNed offers Linux-based hosting only.

What are the main differences between Windows Server 2003 and 2008?

  • IP Address: Because Windows Server 2008 will be on a separate server, migrating from Windows Server 2003 to 2008 will mean that your website's IP address will change.
  • Scripting Paths: Your website is made up of interconnected script and image files. They all reside on our servers and your scripts (like index.html) tell your browser which to load and where to find them. Migration from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 will physically move your files from one server to another and thus require you to change the paths your scripts use to look for your site files.
  • ODBC Drivers: ODBC Drivers allow a web application to make connections to a database. Because these drivers are of a later version in Windows Server 2008 a small change will need to be made when migrating your data.
  • CDONTS: CDONTS is a method used to allow a website to send email from a webpage. CDONTS has been replaced with CDOSYS in Windows Server 2008.
  • FrontPage: FrontPage Extensions allowed Microsoft FrontPage to communicate with web servers. As this is no longer supported by Microsoft, Frontpage Server Extensions will no longer be available for use on a Windows 2008 server, although Frontpage can still be used in FTP mode to edit and upload web pages.
  • Basic/Advanced Password Protection: Basic/Advanced Password Protection is a feature that was provided by us on old Windows Server 2003 hosting packages. This allowed customers to password protect directories in their website. Once you have migrated to Windows Server 2008, this feature will no longer work.
  • iHTML: iHTML is only supported by IIS6 and earlier.  As Windows 2008 uses IIS7, iHTML is no longer supported.
  • .EXE File Handling: .exe files are executable files. These might simply be files for your users to download or they could be CGI applications which you execute. Our Windows 2008 Server platform handles these files slightly differently to our Windows Server 2003 platform.

Thanks for your quick response.  I did finally get it to work.  I don't remember now what I had wrong but I fixed it and it works for me now.  If I remember I had to change the name of ValidateContactform to Validateform to match the name of my form I am using.
Again, thanks for your quick response.
