Sounds like you are on Plesk Linux server.  They may just not be enabled.  To enable, go into plesk under the domain and click on SETUP.  Then under the SERVICES section ensure "Custom Error Documents" is checked.  If still no luck, open a support ticket and reference this thread

I have not used Vista yet.  I really do not see any reason to as og yet.  If I did, I would have to get all new hardware.  That is a lot of cost for seemingly little benifit.

Yes, security is a huge issue with Mambo and other CMS systems.  SSL is basically https:// protocol and almost all HostNed accounts support that, although IMO operating Mambo on https is not necessary.  The big security risks come from a variety of other things.  Make sure you have all security patches installed and turn off register_globals using an .htaccess file.  CHeck with the Mambo support site for further security precautions.

If you are on Linux server with Cpanel, check under the "Raw Access Logs" section.

If you have just recently gotten a domain name or recently changed the nameservers, it may take 1 to 3 days for the name to link up to the server.  In the meantime, use your server IP address to connect to the FTP.  IF you still cannot connect, open a support ticket with all the details.

PHPBB is allright but be sure to keep up with the updates and patches for security reasons.

I think Google Sitemaps thing is useful for if you are really picky about how/when Google indexes your pages, but for most sites, the natural/automatic process Google employs is sufficient.

I really want lots of opinions on this.  Is Google SiteMaps really necessary?  Do you use their Sitemap Generator Tool or do you use a thrid party service like XML-SiteMaps.

I am going to have to challenge your statement.  The pricing appears to be on average 50 cents cheaper, but their home page is a PR0 which leads me to believe they are a new company trying to get started.  All the best to them, but I would stick with a known champ like cafepress.

One thing I do like about customdropshipper.com is their selection.  They seem to have all the stuff cafepress has and then some.  I applaud them for their creative magnets, puzzles and golf ball markers.

You may need to set permissions on the file to 777.  I would not worry too much about security of that.  The Hall of Shame is mainly popular scripts that hackers find through google and know are exploitable.  Your setitng 777 to a specific file most likely would not offer any dangerous opportunities (database injections, cross-site scripting, etc...) for anyone.

As for the owners of the files, yes, I believe you are right.  I am not for sure, but I think that if the file is created by your FTP client, it is owned by your username.  If it is created by your FileManager, it may be owned by apache.  Thats why sometimes a CHMOD 644 (default) or 755 will do, but sometimes 777 is needed.
