As part of our most recent server upgrades, our Cpanel servers (CP2 and CP3) have changed from DSO to FastGGI.  This brings us faster page loading times and more security.

Additionally the servers now have much better support for Wordpress users.

This change also renders certain .htaccess directives invalid now, they no longer support php_flag and php_value commands.  In fact, including these commands now will render an error 500 and the site will not load properly.  If you have this problem, go in to your .htaccess file and check for lines that contain these directives and if present, comment them out or remove them. 

Register_globals is now fully off.  PHP has been phasing out the register_globals function over the past few years and to stay up to speed, HostNed has now fully dropped support for this.

[Mail Filtering]

We are pleased to announce that for those who use Cpanel hosting, Mail Filtering is now available for users of RoundCube Webmail.  To access the filters, go to SETTINGS in the webmail.

The mail filtering is client-side, so that means it will only filter when using RoundCube.  If you switch to SquirrelMail or Horde, the filters will not apply there.

Cpanel servers MySQL will be upgraded to version 5.1 today.

[Options]

        This article provides instructions on setting up a Fetch Mail account in   Horde, so that you can retrieve messages from an existing e-mail   account that you have outside of your domain. 
     REQUIREMENTS:   

   
• An existing Linux hosting account. 

   
• An existing e-mail box. If you do not yet have an e-mail box set up, you can create one in your control panel. 

   
• Log in to Webmail by entering the following URL in your browser (substituting "yourdomain.com" with your actual domain name): "https://yourdomain.com:2096" 
• On the Horde navigation menu, expand Options and then click Mail.
     
• Under the Message Options section, click on Fetch Mail.
     
• On the Fetch Mail page, click on the first item, Edit your preferences for accessing other mail accounts.
     
• On the next page (under Other Mail Accounts), click on the Create New Account option. 
• From the Mail server type to connect to: drop-down box, select IMAP/POP3 Mail Servers. 
• On the Other Mail Accounts page, specify the settings, as follows:
     
  
        
  • Account's name:  Other Account, or any other name that you would like to use to distinguish the account from other accounts. 
  • Protocol:  IMAP (Auto Detect) 
  • Username: E-mail address for the account that you want to retrieve mail from 
  • Password: Password for that e-mail account 
  • Server: The incoming mail server hostname; (e.g., mail.otherdomaindomain.com)
  • Remote Mailbox: Inbox 
  • Local Mailbox: Inbox  (bring the fetched mail into the INBOX)
• Select the check box for "Get only new messages?"  (Or for a more permanent setup, select instead "Delete fetched messages from remote server?".  Configure to your preference)
• Click the Create button. 
• Click Return to Fetch Mail. 
• Click Save Options. 
• On the toolbar (at the top of the page), click on the Fetch Mail option.
     
• On the Fetch Mail page, leave the [Other Account] (the one you just configured) check box selected and then click the Fetch Mail button.
   
    If mail retrieval is successful, you will see mail messages for the   account, along with the following message "Fetchmail: Fetched XX   messages from [other account] Account [name of other account]".

What is SquirrelMail you ask?  Well, it's WebMail for nuts!

SquirrelMail is a standards-based webmail package written in PHP. It includes built-in pure PHP support for the IMAP and SMTP protocols, and all pages render in pure HTML 4.0 (with no JavaScript required) for maximum compatibility across browsers. It has very few requirements and is very easy to configure and install. SquirrelMail has all the functionality you would want from an email client, including strong MIME support, address books, and folder manipulation.

You will now find SquirrelMail available in your webmail login as an optional alternative to Horde and RoundCube.  Personally, Squirrel Mail is now my favorite option -- more features than RoundCube and more reliable (more compatible with a variety of browsers and clients) than Horde.

For those customers on Linux Cpanel (nice choice BTW) you can reach your webmail at the following locations:

What's the deal with WebMail?  Why is it so great?

Well, webmail is not hosted locally (like Outlook, Apple Mail, Eudora, Thunder Bird, etc...).  Now, there is nothing wrong with these mail clients per se... especially for businesses.  These local email programs are chock full of features and are very trusted.  The problems arise when you want to access your email from a remote location.  Say you are on your laptop or are traveling and at a hotel "business center".  These programs are not directly accessible from there and even if your IT department has gone through the rigors of making your email "remotely available", it can still be a PITA to access and "sync" all the time.

OK, so webmail has been around for quite some time now, but many businesses shy away from it due to lack of features.  There are third party webmail provider like Gmail, YahooMail, AOL Mail, etc... but there are security, spyware, and adware issues to contend with with those.

So you have your own domain, your own hosting, plenty of space and pre-installed web-based email options, so why not?  Well, webmail admittedly did have some catching up to do ... and it has ... finally.

Horde has been around for eons.  It has a numerous amount of features, but it uses some complex JavaScript which may not work on all web browsers.  The option that has caught up to Horde (and surpassed it IMO) is SquirrelMail.

OK, now on to the list of cool features available in this webmail option has to offer:

- Access to your email from anywhere (unlike Outlook, ThunderBird, Apple Mail, Eudora, etc...)
- Numerous configurable options like email drafts, signature lines,
- Address Book - For keeping track of all your contacts.

- Calendar to help manage your time and appointments.
- Fetch mail from external sources (POP3).
- Automatically check mail.

- Set custom SPAM filtering rules.
- Avoid SPAMMERS with image filtering and custom rules.
- Translate foreign language text.

[Check port 21 on a Windows OS]

The default TCP port for FTP connection is port 21. Sometimes the connection gets blocked by a local firewall rule or your Internet Service Provider blocks this port and this will result in FTP connection issues.

Here's how to, depending on your OS, check whether an essential port is being blocked by your PC, LAN or ISP:

Click on the Start menu button, usually located on the left low corner of the screen. There is a tab called "Run". You have to click on it, in order to proceed further. You will notice the appearance of a new small window on the screen. In the text field of this window you need to type "cmd" and then press the "Enter" key. Another window will open. It is the so called "MS-DOS prompt" or "command prompt". Just type the following command in the command prompt window and press "Enter":

Check port 21 on an Apple/Mac OS

Each Mac OS is delivered with a preinstalled terminal emulator. The terminal is a tool which allows you to execute commands from the command line. Usually, the terminal is located under your Mac HD -> "Applications" directory -> Utilities sub-directory. When the window opens, you will see a command line with a flashing cursor on it so you can start typing right away. Just type the following command and press "Enter":

Open your favorite terminal emulator and execute the following command in order to telnet your website:

If the test is successful, you should receive a message like this:

If the welcome message similar to the one above does not appear, you should first look at your settings for your Firewall in your OS then in your router.  If everything is set properly there, contact your local ISP and ask them to unblock this port at their end.

The email passwords in the new Plesk (10+) are now managed in the webmail interface.

OK, so you want to take your Facebook newsfeed content and use RSS to include it on a web page elsewhere.  Here is how to do it.

Use the RSS News Feed Reader App at

Allow it the permission and follow the steps to enroll for that.  It will then give you an RSS Subscription URL

Copy that URL and go to RSS DOG at

http://www.rssdog.com

Now paste the URL into the box there and click the MAKE THE CODE button

You will then be presented the code (scroll down a bit ti see it and example output) to use on your web page.

Since the upgrade to PHP version 5.3.8, many sites are reporting error messages similar to this one...

Function ereg() is deprecated in /home/domain/public_html/file.php

This can be easily fixed by editing the PHP code in the file.

Find "ereg" and replace with "preg"

That should suppress the annoying error message.

  1- Open Microsoft Outlook Express                                     
  2- Choose the Tools menu and then select Accounts.
  3- Click MAIL tab then click the ADD button and again choose MAIL.                                       
  4- Enter your name. This is the name that people will see when they receive an e-mail from you.
  5- Choose Next.
  6- If prompted, choose I already have an e-mail address that I would like to use.
  7- Enter your complete E-mail address. You must already have this address account installed.
  Example: webmaster@yourdomainnamehere.com                                     
    8- Choose Next.
  9- Incoming Server should be set to use POP3 by default. If not, chooose POP3.
  10- Enter the Incoming Mail Server Name.
  Example: mail.yourdomainnamehere.com                             
    11-   Enter the Outgoing Mail Server   Name.
  Example: mail.yourdomainnamehere.com (You may also use SMTP   provided by your ISP)
    12- Choose Next.
  13- Enter your email Account Name. (typically this is the entire email   address)
  14- Enter your email Account Password.
  15- If you want to have your   password saved, so that you don't   have to type it when checking   e-mail, place a check in the   Remember password box.
  16- Secure Password Authentication should be unchecked by default. If  not, uncheck Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA).                                       
  17- Choose Next.
  18- Choose Finish to save your settings.                                     
  ** If your ISP or SMTP provider requires SMTP authentication, then  continue below. If not then your setup is complete:
    19- Choose the Mail tab.
  20- You will see the account you just created in the white box. Click  on it (select/highlight) Account and then choose the Properties button.                                       
  21- Choose the Servers tab.
  22- Check the box My Server   requires authentication.
  23- Choose the Apply button.
